St. Ives, famous not only for its superb coastal setting but also its many contemporary artists and new Tate Gallery, is amongst the most visited of all Cornish towns, but this route takes you there mostly by quiet back roads. There is a lengthy pull up from Carbis Bay to Knill’s Monument (where there is a brief stretch of footpath to be walked) but the views more than compensate for the effort! There are ample refreshment and shopping facilities in St. Ives Cornwall. You return by the same route.
Start: Foundry Square, Hayle, Cornall
Take B3302 signed Leedstown, climb away from Hayle and on outskirts
take right turn just before bypass flyover into Water Lane.
Descend to ‘T’ junction, turn left to St. Erth.
Turn right over river and next right towards Railway Station.
Turn right onto A30 and proceed for 300 yds to
roundabout, bear left and drop down to mini roundabout. Turn right and
after approx. 200 yds turn left into Railway ‘Park & Ride’.
Pass through ‘opening’ onto metalled road at Lelant Saltings.
Follow estuary, passing Railway Halt, to St. Uny Church.
Continue towards St. lves, passing Golf Club, until meeting A3074 main
road. Straight across, through Laity.
Continue the steady climb for approx. 2 miles until level with Knills
Monument on right side. Dismount and use footpath past monument to
metalled road.
Turn left and descend down to St. Ives.
Return by same route.
